Payal Shah On Crafting Show-Stopping Jewellery That Takes Red Carpets By Storm
The jeweller who keeps the stars shining!
It’s no secret that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Ones to make a bold statement when donned, the sparkly natural rocks exude an air of unapologetic confidence that turns heads as you walk into a room.
Hong Kong-based Payal Shah (@payalia) leverages the powerful beauty of diamonds to create striking jewellery for her brand L’ Dezen that can make any woman channel her inner showstopper. In fact, Shah’s stunning pieces are among the favourites of stars like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and even Nick Jonas, and have graced many of Hollywood’s red carpets.
Shah tells us all about the exact moment she embraced her title as an entrepreneur, her new streetwear collection, her skincare routine responsible for her gorgeous glow, and so much more.
What were you doing before L' Dezen?
I graduated from the University of Westminister with a BA in Architecture and also got a diploma from Inchbald in Interior Design. Once I graduated, I returned to Hong Kong and worked in a Design Hospitality firm for a year. I was working on a capsule collection on the side for another jewellery company which did quite well. That is when I decided to start a small, but my own jewellery brand: L' Dezen.
Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?
I never really understood what an entrepreneur was until I was well into 2 years of my business. I was just going along the ride and crossing the hurdles of starting and running a business. It was an interview I did for a jewellery magazine once that titled me an entrepreneur. That is when I read it to myself and said, “Wow! I am an entrepreneur!. I guess this is what it feels like to be one.” I always had a business acumen and knew I could wear many hats as long as I had the determination.
What defines a modern woman in 2021 to you?
A modern woman for me is someone who wants it all and can be it all. In this time and age, women portray multiple roles and do it effortlessly. You can’t box her. She is multi-faceted and is constantly evolving. She’s open to changes and faces challenges head-on. She constantly pushes her limit and dares to dream big. She strives to make every aspect of her life a great one, whether it be family or career.
How would you describe your style?
My personal style can be influenced by different cultures, but is also deep-rooted in my upbringing and active lifestyle. I have a unique eye for fashion when I’m in the mood to experiment. I love colours, patterns, and bold styles. However, if I have a busy day, a look that can take me from day to night is ideal. I’m launching my streetwear collection 'UAxLD' line under L' Dezen, which is inspired by my own lifestyle and style.
What’s one accessory every woman must have?
An infectious/kind smile.
What does your self-care routine look like?
My self-care routine is a result of tried and tested theories for dry skin. I try to use low sensitive, high moisturizing products. I apply sunscreen religiously. I have recently started using AHAs and retinoids in small quantities. I also like massaging my face with rollers for a firmer look. Every night, no matter how tired I feel, a huge priority is to clean my face before going to bed.
What’s your favourite female-owned brand(s) at the moment?
Julia Marcs based in Hong Kong has a business called Lai Mur Films. She recently did two of my video shoots for my brands and her work is so incredible. She wears many hats. She is a professional model and a DJ too. I am extremely proud of her.
Who’s your Chika?
If I was to describe a woman in my life who is inspiring, strong and independent, no one comes to mind more than my mother. She is someone who pushed me to live outside my comfort zone and live every day to the fullest. She is the definition of strong.
