Sally Ryder is the founder of boutique fine jewellery brand RYDER Diamonds based in Hong Kong. The RYDER Experience offers a personalised service to help you create a one-of-a-kind, bespoke jewellery pieces handcrafted by the most talented local artisan jewellers. We also love the ready-to-wear collection, which make for an elegant addition for a special occasion.
Read ahead as Ryder shares her self-care routine, proudest moments, and everything in between.
What were you doing before Ryder Diamonds?
After graduating from university in Melbourne, I pursued a career in finance and came to Hong Kong with a new job in the early 2000s. During my university days, I applied for a part-time sales job, and with no actual background in sales, found myself selling diamonds at a trading company. It was my first taste of the industry, and it was from this point that I developed a desire and affinity towards diamonds and fine jewellery.
Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?
To some extent, yes. After discovering my interest in diamonds and jewellery, I had my heart set on founding my own brand at the right time in my life. I had even achieved a certification in Gemology after graduation with the ambition of returning back to the industry.
What defines a modern woman in 2021 to you?
A modern woman is someone that unapologetically embraces every facet and ‘flaw’ with a sense of confidence and strength.
What’s one accessory every woman must have?
An exquisite piece of handcrafted diamond jewellery. My ultimate favourite is our Ryder Signature Eternity Ring, a full band with brilliant-cut diamonds that is aesthetically so delicate but is crafted to last an eternity!
What does your self-care routine look like?
To me, self-care is spending quality time with my family. It’s so easy to get caught up with work but connecting with my nearest and dearest provides the recharge I need.
What’s your favourite female-owned brand(s) at the moment?
I absolutely love BYDEAU, founded by Jennifer Margolin. I believe she has really perfected the art of gift giving with elegant packaging and beautiful fresh flowers. You can really see the thought and care in each gift they create.
What advice would you give to anyone who’s looking to start their own business?
When I started off in the industry in Hong Kong, I took the initiative to forge long-lasting relationships that have been pivotal to the foundation and success of RYDER Diamonds. I found a niche that spoke true to what I was passionate about, a desire to revive the dying art of fine jewellery craftsmanship and to create a place that was the “Lexus” of diamonds, where I was able to offer luxurious handcrafted jewellery at a more affordable price.

Tell us about your proudest moments as an entrepreneur?
At RYDER, we have the unique opportunity to work with individuals and couples as they are planning for momentous occasions and create from start to finish one-of-a-kind pieces for them to treasure for a lifetime. The expression on their face when they see the evolution of the piece in their workshop and then finally receive the finished piece is incredibly fulfilling for us as a team.
Who’s your Chika?
I’m lucky to have four incredible Chika’s, and they are my RYDER team members: Katie, Saki, Marilyn, and Jennifer. While not a woman, Frankie, our master jeweller, is an integral part of our team and inspires me every day!
