Wellness Reboot at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental
Talk about #StaycationGoals.
It’s not as easy to switch off and recharge on a hometown holiday as it would be on, say, a far-flung island or a cruise somewhere. But a staycation at Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong comes pretty close. With a prestigious address adjacent luxury mall The Landmark, the location of the hotel couldn’t be more central. But that doesn’t mean you can’t unwind without distractions from the outside world—it just means oversized soaking tubs, goose down bedding and world-class spa facilities are within arm’s reach.
The Spa
Wellness is Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s forte, evident from its awarding-winning Orient Spa. Spread over two floors, the harmonious temple to bliss includes 15 treatment rooms, a couples suite, a traditional hammam, a Moroccan rasul and first-class heat and water facilities. With an aim to craft a bespoke spa experience tailored to individual needs, the body massage begins with an in-depth consultation with one of the highly-trained therapists, who escorts me to the Spa’s VIP offering—the Sanctuary Suite. Stepping into the fittingly-named suite, I was transported to a haven of serenity where a private amethyst crystal steam room, luxurious vitality tub, dual massage beds, shared futon mattress, private vanity and changing area await. Once seated, my therapist introduces me to three specially-selected aromatherapy oil blends with different therapeutic effects to be applied during the massage.
Laying face down on the ultra-soft and heated massage bed, I relax into a meditative state while my therapist performs a sequence of warm oil application, followed by a tension-busting massage to work my sore joints and muscles. Paying special attention to my upper back, she uses her forearm to execute long, gliding strokes and her intuitive hands to disentangle the knots under my neck and shoulders with precise kneading. After 60 minutes of pure bliss, I wake up to a soothing head massage and a cup of jasmine tea, to be enjoyed with the healthy snacks. The treats just keep coming, as the last stage comes with an hour of relaxation time to enjoy the suite facilities. I snug my feet into the plush slippers and prepare myself for an aromatic bath at the tepidarium-style tub.
The Room
Of all the rooms and suites available at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, the L900 suites are the pick of the bunch. At 893 square feet, the suite impresses with a statement marble entrance that leads to the spectacular circular glass walled bathroom equipped with a spherical bathtub, separate rainforest shower and twin vanity units with mirror TV.
The bathroom amenities from Cochine deem befitting for the grandeur, using an uplifting scent of Water Hyacinth & Lime Blossom reminiscent of sun-filled afternoons in lush landscapes to bring a heightened sense of luxury. On the right side of this centrepiece is a living room with a dining table and richly textured custom-made furnishings that impart residential-style comfort. The palette of warm and neutral colours contribute to the welcoming atmosphere that exudes from each room, as does the use of a crystal vitrine that houses welcome snacks by the hotel’s Culinary Director, Chef Richard Ekkebus, which is always a thoughtful touch.
The bedroom, meanwhile, is fitted with designer Joyce Wang’s purposeful use of textures, hand-painted silk walls, a curvaceous quilted leather headboard and a king-size bed with Ploh 400-thread count bedding. Another highlight worth mentioning is the hotel’s sustainability initiatives, which include its own in-house filtered, purified bottled water using the Nordaq FRESH system and a compressive ‘Grab & Go’ BPA free impact-resistant bottle with a reusable LMO bag available for purchase in all guestrooms and suites.
